THE SWAN ( FREE SPIRIT ) SHALL FLY AWAY ALONE ONE DAY

CAREFUL... SOMEDAY THE SWAN ( THE FREE SPIRIT ) SHALL FLY AWAY ALONE FROM THIS WORLDLY SPECTACLE......

Sung by  Kumar Gandharva and many others , this Kabir. Bhajan attained immense popularity  within the country.  The  Bhajan is based on the  philosophy of Karma ( actions ) .The origin of Karma lies in the oldest Hindu text known as the Rig Veda, believed to have been written down. by the rishis in 1500BCE. Karma is the law of Cause And Effect and an integral part of the  Hindu philosophy . In simple terms, a person's actions determine his fruits or results . While doing or thinking about something , human beings create a cause which is bound to create its effect. And as per Bhagwad Geeta , Karma or our actions fall in three categories ..The Satvik karma, which is without attachment, selfless and for the benefit of others; the Rajasik Karma, which is selfish where the focus is on gains for oneself; and the Tamasik karma, which is undertaken without heed to consequences, and is supremely selfish and savage. The philosophy of Karma finds mention in Upanishads as well.In the Upanishads, the idea of karma is explained as the universal justice that governs all human behavior. The basic concept behind karma is that all actions have consequences. Everything we do in one life will have an effect on our future existence. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad says ,  (1) executed actions of an individual affects the individual and the life he or she lives, and (2) the intentions of an individual affects the individual and the life he or she lives.

For Kabir , this world is nothing more than a spectacle or a fair . And   Karma is the  only thing that is to be carried away by the free spirit when it flies away. A King as well as a  beggar shall have to leave this ,"Worldly Fair"  once the time limit of their stay over here is over .

  Who could escape Yama ‘s ( Lord of Death ) Robust messengers ? The Guru  ( master ) and his  Chela (follower ) have to meet Yama ( Lord of Death ) one day.  Both shall carry with them their   Karma alone .About Karma ,Meerabai  says, "*Udho ,Karman ki gati nyaari , moorakh baitha raj kare hai Pandit phire bikhari." ( Strange is the result of Karma , it makes a fool sit on throne while throws the learned sage into wandering ) 

Does a fallen leaf meet the tree again ?

I have also attempted to render this Bhajan to simple English….

"Udd Jayegaa Hans Akela,
Jug Darshan Ka Melaa
Jaise Paat Gire Taruvar Se,
Milnaa Bahut Duhelaa
Naa Jane Kidhar Giregaa,
Lageya Pawan Ka Relaa
Jub Howe Umar Puri,
Jab Chhute Gaa Hukum Huzuri
Jam Ke Dhoot Bade Mazboot,
Jam Se Pada Jhamelaa
Das Kabir Har Ke Gun Gaawe
Wah Har Ko Paran Paawe
Guru Ki Karni Guru Jayegaa,
Chele Ki Karni Chehla"

(Alone shall fly this Free spirit ( Swan) ,
Leaving this Worldly Fair.
Not possible to meet again then;
Who knows where the leaf shall get carried away by the wind once it falls to ground ?
Once the time limit is over
Or the cycle of command and servitude
comes to an end ,
The entanglement with YAMA is bound to take place ;
Who could escape his robust messengers?
Being stationed at the feet of his Master ,
Kabir sings in praise of his Lord .
The Master ( Guru ) too shall meet his fate according to his deeds ,
And so shall the follower leave this worldly fair with his deeds .

* Uddhav was Sri  Krishna's cousin. He was  the son of Devabhaga , the brother of Vasudeva, Krishna's father. He looked like Sri Krishna .Sri Krishna has been a teacher to Udhava. Sri Krishna gave Uddhava His final teachings in the form of the Uddhava-gita, the longest philosophical section of the Bhagavatam.Hamsa Gita (Sanskrit) (also referred to as Uddhava Gita) consists of Krishna's final discourse to Uddhava before Krishna draws his worldly 'descent' (Sanskrit: avatar) and 'pastimes' (Sanskrit: lila) to completion.



So shall the follower leave this worldly fair.

Rasul Mir is known as John Keats of kashmiri poetry. He lived in the second half of Nineteenth centuary . May be around 1820 to 1890 AD. He worked as Nambardar and lived in and around Dooru Shahbaad area near Anantnaag in Kashmir. His poems convey the names of villages , water sources and general scenery of this area . I visited this are twice ; Once during 2010 and the again in 2011. An elderly person told me that Mr M Y Teng had visited Rasul Mir’s native village many times for compilation of Kuliyaat on the poet. Mr Teng is reported to have screened many old records and finally found an old revenue document of 1889 AD bearing signatures of Poet Rasul Mir as Nambardar . This interalia confirms that this poet lived in the last half of nineteenth century .

Rasul Mir was a poet of love and romance .His poems bear fragrance of flowers and music of murmuring brooks of the area where he lived . These poems act as catalytic agents of love and life . As far as I know , four poets wrote kashmiri poems with a total love filled heart and Rasul Mir happens to be the tallest amongst them. Other three could be Mehmood Gaami , Arinmaal and Habba Khatoon. .These poets touched the delicate and heart touching issues of love and separation while their contemporaries focused on Traditional Mathnavi, Leela ,Mystical or sufi poetry. Many scholars are of the view that Rasul Mir was in love with a Hindu Girl of his village . He refers to this girl as Padmani , Henziyaani , Kongi , Soundermaal and Kostuuri in his poems .

(1) Raza henzi-yaani naaz kyaah anzini gardan
Ya illahi cheshm e bad nishi rachhtan
Gatsi kam kyaah chaanie baargaahi lolo
Rindha poash maal gindinay draayee lolo

How elegant the swan’s neck of henziyani ( Hindu Girl ) looks,
Save her from evil eyes, my Lord !,
Thy gift that won’t diminish O God!
Behold ! The carefree love goes out on a frolic.


(2)Baa veeri-naagai heemael zaagai
Laagai moat gaer- zaan
Pooli to cheena-gund kya draengi,
Kongi haav tai paan.


I shall keep waiting for you at Veerinag,
clothed as an unidentified sadhu ( faquir),
shall look for you at Pooli, cheeni-gund and Drengi.
Just for your one quick look Kongi .

(3)Tse yi-vaan roshe chhukh naataah
hoashe dallayo madno
Baa rivaan sormaa chesman
Sormaa chhaalaeyo madno.

And there you stay away from me my annoyed love
And here my senses give me up.
These tears trickle down my eyes
And wash all the Kohl .

WHEN AISH TURNED MONA LISA

In 2008 Actor Lalit Parimoo's veteran uncle and the former Dean of Baroda Faculty of Fine Arts, painter, Ratan Parimoo, exhibited his works in Mumbai's Jehangir Art Gallery The show displayed exotic Indian culture and heritage. And the main attraction of the exhibition was Ratan Parimoo’s portrait of Aishwarya Bachchan.Her beauty was compared with the Leonardo da Vinci's Monalisa by the painter. Ratan Parimoo displayed his unique piece of art in Mumbai's Jehangir Art Gallery.

Ratan Parimoo (born 1936 in Srinagar, Kashmir) is one of the major art historians and painters of modern India. He was for a long time a professor at the M.S. University in Vadodara. He is married to the artist Naina Dalal. His paintings are included in the collection of India's National Gallery of Modern Art. Prof Parimoo was one of the youngest painters to respond to the 'abstract style' of the first modernist movements of the country after Independence. He has been a life-long teacher of art history and aesthetics .
