PRAN NATH MAGO ARTIST FROM PUNJAB WHO LOVED KASHMIR

RUMOURS  1947 ... A PAINTING BY PRAN NATH MAGO

WHO WAS PRAN NATH MAGO ?...

I have always admired the scholarship of Pran Nath Mago ( 1923-2006 ).Mago had been an accomplished painter , art Critic and Art Historian from Lahore . For him Lahore was not a city but a culture and Tradition that was not so easy to forget once he moved to Delhi post partition. His paintings on 1947 events are poignant and sad tales of human pain and suffering. He is grossly impartial in dealing with the subject of human misery and suffering.

The tragic event of 1947 brought pain and suffering to every Household in Punjab .It made every woman a sufferer . Who shall console whom ?

( Mourners 1947..... By Pran Nath Mago )
I recommend his Book “ CONTEMPORORY ART IN INDIA” published by National Book Trust priced Rs250/= to every Art lover . You have really missed something great if this Book has not caught your attention.

( FAREWELL 1945 By Pran Nath Mago )

Above painting shows Punjab's Youth being recruited in 1945  for battle fields of world War II by British rulers.

                                                               ( Pran Nath Mago )

Pran Nath Mago was a moving force behind Setting up of Delhi Silpi Chakra In 1949. This Group had many prominent Artists from Lahore who had moved to India post Partition in 1947. This group included Satish Gujral,B C Sanyal , Dhan Raj Bhagat , Kanwal krishna ,Damyanti Chawla ,Param Jit Singh , K S Kulkarni , Rameshwar Broota and many more Artists.

This Group believed that Art must not be divorced from life and Art of a nation must express the soul of its people apart from allying with the process of progress .

Mago was a lover of kashmir .He visited kashmir valley frequently and had many friends over there . He was also a source of Inspiration for many kashmiri Artists.

Adds Artist kapil Kaul:

"P N Mago was acquainted with late Sh. P. N. Kachru (artist). Mago was designated, so far I know, as guest examiner for the graduation examination   of J&K Institute of Music &Fine Arts back in the 1970s."
