A FASHION WALK ON 7TH AVENUE MANHATTAN NEW YORK……..REMEBERING THOSE WHO CREATED APPAREL DESIGNS WORLD OVER

As we come out from "WASABI " (Japanese Restaurant ) located on  40th Street ( 7th Avenue ) Midtown Manhattan New York, I find something Interesting on the sidewalks / footpath . White Metallic Plaques embedded to honour well known Apparel Designers who created trends and styles world over ; A Grand Tribute to Garment Creators and the Industry as such. A great effort or perhaps the only effort to remember and recognize creativity of style and Comfort in the dress that we wear. I found that these Plaques have been embedded right from 35th street to 41 street on 7th Avenue . People call it FASHION WALK OF FAME . Every sidewalk between two adjacent streets has either four or six plaques embedded .The area is also known as Garment or fashion District of New York.
I could see something around 25 plaques out of a total of 28 .I also saw an eight feet metal statue of a Garment worker on in this walk . I was told that the Statue has been created by well known Sculptor Judith Weller . This bronze statue depicting a garment worker ( With a Cap ) with bowed head. The worker is shown busy at his sewing machine , as if reality has been turned inside out like a piece of clothing and he is ceaselessly stitching the metropolis The statue created in 1984 honours the contribution of Garment workers . 

The Jewish community has immensely contributed in Garment manufacturing and designing . In fact some leading fashion designers like Kenneth Cole, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, and many more belonged to this community . These designers were responsible for freeing garment Designing from French Influence . They were also responsible for introducing the concept of design to furnishings and other “lifestyle” elements. 

Some years back, it was quite difficult to walk on 7th avenue as Cart loads of Garments were either loaded or emptied on by Apparel Traders who had their spacious Godowns in this Garment District . Apart from others , a large number of Italian Immigrants ( who worked in Sewing and stitching rooms ) were also connected with Garment Manufacturing .


I found Plaques dedicated to Geoffrey Beene, Liz Claiborne , Ralph Rucci , Rudi Gernreich , Donalds Brooks , Marc Jacobs , Perry Ellis , Lilly Dache , Bonnie Cashin Claire Mccardell , Norman Norell , Charles James , Anne Klein ,Stephan Burrows , Norma Kamali , Betsey Johnson, Kenneth Cole, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Bill Blass and many  more renowned fashion / Garment Designers .
